It is an outlet river of lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

At the mouth it carries 1,769 m³/s on average: an Olympic pool every 1.4 seconds. It drops from 767 m to 548 m, 0.7 m per kilometre on average. Its basin covers 244,500 km², about the size of GB. 14.5 million people live in it. Highest water: from January to March; lowest: from July to October. No large dam holds it back: it is one of the world's free-flowing rivers.
